The Farewell Ceremony of the International Banking Leadership Programme
“Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure” Confucius
It has been such an amazing journey with our Executive Business English students from China Construction Bank (CCB)! For nine months, we all have worked, experienced, lived and leaned so much with and from each other. Every day brought a new challenge. How to improve language skills, knowledge skills, cultural and behavior skills. You really have challenged yourself in order to improve in such a holistic way, always looking further ahead. On the 8th of November it was time to host the CCB students, representatives, mentors and teachers for the Farewell Ceremony of the International Banking Leadership Programme for Business Executive Communication-in-English and Banking Studies.
There was a time to learn about “The complexity of a problem called Corruption”, about “The opportunities and challenges in the Post-Industrial Age of the China and US trade”, about “How 5G Networks will Release the Power of the Internet of Things (IoT)”, if “Accounting Firms can help Banks to Grow”, the “Blockchain and Its Applications to Banking Business”, so many new questions struggling for an answer, business newspapers to read and a whole new world of meaningful sounds and concepts to learn.
During these nine months of constant learning and immersion on the British culture, you also visited places like Deloitte, one of the “Big Four” accounting organizations, and the European headquarters of Bloomberg, in London, a major financial, software, data and media company. You also visited unforgettable places like the Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO world heritage place, boasting a 300 years long history. Also famous for being the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and you will take with you some of his believes. Like this one: “Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees all the others”. In your memory there will also be the unique experience of visiting to the British Parliament, where you were given a taste of how democracy works in the UK and how the Government cannot make new laws or raise new taxes without the Parliament’s agreement.
Stimulating experiences, which enlightened the CCB students, giving them the right tools to face new challenges and shape the future. “Miracle creators”, was the expression that one of the CCB representatives used at this Farewell ceremony to the International Banking Leadership Programme. “After one of the most valuable experiences in your life, in this moment of such a huge transformation in the world, you have been empowered with great vision, innovation concepts, language skills and a new mind set. Now you feel much more comfortable among other cultures. You have made such a huge progress! So, yes, you are ready to face what comes next!” Because this first programme was such a success, it is the China Construction Bank believe that the cooperation will grow stronger.
For the ones (chosen from thousands of CCB staff) that are reaching the end of this journey a reminder that “every end has a new beginning” and they should always bear in mind “how proud we are of all they have accomplished” and the “great expectations we have for their future!”
For this first Executive Course Programme runing outside China for Peking University, the University will issue the Certificates of Study written in English for the first time in history. So, the CCB students are now, officially, part of the Peking University family. As the Director of PHBS UK emphasized “This was your home far away from home”. Professor Guy Liu shared what were his thoughts in the beginning of this programme. How he could “add value, how he could empower this new generation, how he really wanted to raise them on his shoulders”. There is no doubt that this CCB students “will became leaders”!
“You were excellent ambassadors from China” added Eric Smith, responsible for the Executive Business English Programme. “Go full of confidence” and we all wish you “health, prosperity and good fortune”.
In order to show their appreciation, the CCB students had some offers they wanted to give to the PHBS UK staff, academic members and Directorate. As a symbol of hope for a safe journey they offered a “Chinese Wealth Ship”, as a representation of energy and abundance brought by wind and water, sailing into port. “This ship is sailing now”, said Professor Guy Liu! “Thank you, my Captain!”, answered the students.
Wisdom is something that you will bring, in you, wherever you go. It can only grow stronger and brighter. PHBS UK knows you will make the difference! We wish you the best of luck and success! Thank you for being part of the PHBS UK family! And always remember Confucius: “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.”
