We are extremely sad to hear that the Former Chairman of HSBC for Asia and Pacific Region, Mr Vincent Haiquan Cheng, died on 28 August 2022 at age of 74. We express our sincere condolences to his wife and family.
Mr Vincent Cheng was the first Chinese Chairman of HSBC for Asia and Pacific region in the bank’s history. Under his leadership in the region, he led the Bank to donate £15 million to Peking University for its New Business School at Shenzhen Campus, namely Peking University HSBC Business School (PHBS). He had been the first joint chairman of the Council of Peking University HSBC Business School since 2008.
Mr Vincent Zheng was brought up from a poor family and suffered poliomyelitis at his childhood. His parents were fruit vendors on the street, and lived in a small house with other 5 families. After he graduated from the Chinese University of HK in 1973 for his first degree, he went to New Zealand for his postgraduate study in economics, and his study was supported from his part time job on washing dishes in a restaurant at the beginning. He joined HSBC in 1978, and became the chief economist of the Bank in 1986. He became CEO of HSBC in 1995, then the first Chinese Chairman of HSBC in HK in 2005. He became the Chairman of the Council of the Chinese University of HK in Oct 2009.
Mr Vincent Cheng had been very supportive for Peking University HSBC Business School, and the School could not become one of the most prestigious business schools in the world over last 20 years of development without his persistent support and contribution. We sincerely pay our tribute to our great friend, Vincent, for his remarkable contribution to our School.
He will be remembered by all members of UK Campus of Peking University HSBC Business School forever.
