Department of Basic Industries of the National Development and Reform Commission Visit PHBS UK
On September 4th 2018, the Department of Basic Industries of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC delegation) visited the United Kingdom to deliberate the new urbanization and Intelligent Transportation Construction.
At the UK campus of Peking University HSBC Business School, the 19-people delegation has conducted a discussion with scholars and experts from the Chinese and British Artificial Intelligence Association. They discussed topics about investment development in the UK transport sector, intelligent transportation development, etc. The primary objective of the NDRC's mission in the UK is "the country's new urbanization and collaborative innovation (transportation, industry, space)".
At the beginning of the symposium, Chu Qi, the Deputy Inspector of the Basic Industries Department of the NDRC, introduced the composition of the delegation members and the purpose of the trip. The delegation is composed of workers from relevant departmental units and economic transportation of Reform Commission Systems, which includes the National Development and Reform Commission Foundation Industry Department, Comprehensive Transportation Research Institute, China Civil Aviation Administration, National Railway Administration, China Transportation Association, China Railway Corporation, China Railway Design Group Co., Ltd., China International Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd., the Infrastructure Development Center of Beijing Foreign Consulting Co., Ltd., as well as Representative staff of the NDRC from Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Chengdu, Jiangsu Province, Hubei province, Guangdong province, Yunnan Province. The state of the British transportation sector was told from the perspective of traffic-related industry practitioners, and the delegation expected to learn about the course of British transportation development, intelligent transportation, experience and achievements, challenges and shortcomings.
Secondly, Professor Liu, the director of the British campus, briefed the NDRC training mission on the development and positioning of the campus and its significance for the innovation of the global educational landscape. Also, professor Liu introduced 5 transport specialists from China-British Artificial Intelligence Association (CBAIA) and professor Li Hua from the University of Reading, which takes part in planning the London high-speed rail project.
Then, Xie Zhikai, the leader of the China-British Artificial Intelligence Association (CBAIA), briefed the guests on the development of the association and its frontier research on artificial intelligence applied to transportation. After that, Doctor Song Yuqi, the Executive Director of the Association and senior data scientist of McKinsey, spoke about the development and trends in the UK transportation industry. Subsequently, Dr. Tao Xinghui, technical director of research and development of machine learning projects, shared an example of the application of intelligent transportation systems to landing applications. Guo Wenbu, a PhD student at Transportation Research Center in Oxford University, highlighted the work of the transportation development in the UK and Oxford Transportation Research Center. Then, Prof. Li Hua introduced the high-speed rail project in Bournemouth. Meanwhile, the executive director of the China-British Artificial Intelligence Association Li Zhenhai, who is also the Head of Strategic line strategy at Oxford Asset Management Limited, was invited to participate in the follow-up discussion. The two sides had a heated discussion about transportation projects, investment and financial systems, intelligent traffic and the intelligent driving, the large infrastructure decision-making mechanism, and the multi-scheme choice comparison.
After the meeting, Prof. Liu showed the delegation around PHBS British campus and took a photo as souvenir.
